Glacial biodiversity featured in Science

Part of the CollembolICE team has recently published a letter in Science, contributing to the international discussion on the urgent need to protect biodiversity in glacial ecosystems.

The work highlights how, despite the global cryosphere crisis, conservation policies still largely overlook glacier biodiversity, focusing mainly on climatic and hydrological aspects. Yet, these environments host highly specialized, often endemic, and still poorly known communities.

Among the key organisms of these ecosystems are springtails, such as glacier fleas, which represent dominant and functionally important components of glacial ecosystems. Their presence clearly shows that glaciers are not just ice masses, but living ecosystems.

The letter calls for the development of integrated monitoring and conservation strategies, and emphasizes the importance of cold refugia in preserving this unique biodiversity even as glaciers continue to retreat.
