Co.Na.G.A.I. has granted its patronage to CollembolICE, a research project on “glacier fleas,” small arthropods considered valuable indicators of climate change. The project is led by the University of Siena (project coordinator), in collaboration with the University of Milan, MUSE – Science Museum of Trento, Citizen Science Italia, and the University of Innsbruck.
The research aims to involve professionals such as mountain guides, guide trainees, mid-mountain escorts, and volcanological guides—people who regularly access mountain and glacial environments—in the sampling phase scheduled for summer-autumn 2025. During their outings, including personal ones, in glacial environments, they will have the opportunity to collect valuable samples for the research (without the need for specific, extra trips).
To understand how to contribute, a free online training webinar (approx. 2 hours) will be offered, covering:
-
The scientific goals of the project
-
The sampling kit (which will be sent for free)
-
How to collect and ship the samples
Two alternative webinar dates are available (the second is a repeat):
-
May 26, 2025, at 6:30 PM
-
June 2, 2025, at 6:30 PM
