Life on the Ice

Seemingly inhospitable, yet how full of life glacial environments truly are! Studying and documenting life in these extreme habitats before it disappears is an urgent mission that concerns us all. This is the message brought by Ivan Petri and Mauro Gobbi from MUSE – Science Museum of Trento, and Barbara Valle from the University of Siena and the National Biodiversity Future Center (NBFC).

These experts will share insights from Alpine and extra-Alpine research projects they are involved in, including the Citizen Science project CollembolICE, and highlight fascinating findings from recent studies on beetles, spiders, and springtails (insect-related organisms that include the so-called “glacier fleas”). One such study was carried out on the Pale di San Martino Plateau, where a completely new species—previously unknown to science—was recently discovered. This new species has been named after the glacier that preserved it for so long: the Fradusta!
