On May 17, a presentation meeting of the CollembolICE project was held at the headquarters of the Lombardy Glaciological Service (SGL), involving glaciological operators active in the region.
The Lombardy Glaciological Service is a non-profit volunteer organization registered in the Italian National Third Sector Register (RUNTS). It was officially founded in 1992, after operating since 1985 within the Central Scientific Committee of the Italian Alpine Club (CAI).
The association is dedicated to scientific research and monitoring of the Alpine glacial environment. It collects and disseminates data to the public, including through scientific publications. SGL promotes knowledge and awareness of glacial, periglacial, and mountain environments more broadly. It shares the results of its research through public meetings, conferences, and educational events aimed at associations and schools.
SGL also provides training for glaciological operators via specialized courses, fosters collaboration with similar organizations in other regions, and creates and maintains glaciological trails. These trails are intended to help illustrate the advance and retreat phases of glaciers and the effects of climate change. Furthermore, SGL takes part in and organizes scientific conferences, exhibitions, and fairs focused on mountain topics, sharing its photographic archives and scientific insights—often with contributions from its members—to raise awareness of its mission and promote appreciation of mountain environments.
The Lombardy Glaciological Service sponsors the CollembolICE project.
